When I was an undergrad at Yale University, a fellow history major asked me how many hours I’d studied for a recent exam. “I put in five hours,” he said, very satisfied with himself. I couldn’t five him an exact number, since I’d never stopped studying. Arriving at Yale from rural Alabama, I was in over my head, to tell you the truth. Most of the other students had attended elite prep schools and were far better prepared than I was. My advantage, though, turned out to be that I worked much harder than they did. For me, there was no such thing as “enough.” No finish line.
